Appendix C. Using a Text Editor with the JDK

Unlike Java development tools such as Visual Café and SunSoft Java WorkShop, the Java Development Kit (JDK) does not come with a text editor to use when you create source files.

In this appendix you'll learn how to select an editor for use with the JDK and how to configure your system to work with that editor.

Choosing a Text Editor

In order for an editor or word processor to work with the JDK, it must be able to save text files with no formatting.

This feature has different names in different editors. Look for a format option such as the following when you save a document or set the properties for a document:

• Plain text

• ASCII text

• DOS text

• Text-only
