1 GETTING STARTED

This chapter begins by discussing how to install Ruby on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. That’s something you’ll likely need to do before following any of the examples in this book (an exception being Mac OS X users, whose operating system comes with Ruby already).

Installing Ruby is something you’ll only do a very limited number of times, so, in a way, the remaining topics in this chapter are actually more important. Of those, the first demonstrates how to test your Ruby installation. Doing so not only confirms that you have Ruby properly installed, but also reveals the version in use.
