Introduction to the second edition

Michael Byram finishes his introduction to the first edition of the Routledge Encyclopedia of Language Teaching and Learning by quoting Umberto Eco, saying “After all the cultivated person’s first duty is to be always prepared to re-write the encyclopedia” (Serendipities. Language and Lunacy, 1999: 21). As the first edition of the encyclopedia is now 13 years old and as research in the field of language learning and teaching has developed rapidly within the last decade, it was quite a pleasure for us to accept the offer of Routledge’s senior editor Andrea Hartill to prepare and publish a second and revised edition of the encyclopedia.
