I t’s late October under a dark red twilight. Streetlights glow as motorists search for shelter in downtown hotels. A few masked citizens point up at the low, bleeding sky, squinting through ash that falls like snow. Coughing through surgical masks, they weigh their chances. “Will there be a home to return to?” It’s twelve noon, but it looks and feels like nighttime in hell.
