Accelerated stress testing (AST) employs stressful conditions to cause failures and thus find problems faster. There are several different tactics for this type of test, each with different goals. An improved design should demonstrate robustness and durability to be better than those of competing designs under those same conditions. That sets an expectation for reduced quality loss and longer useful life under actual conditions. See the descriptions of specific stress tests in Chapters 8 and 22.
