In the design of a product or process, it is essential to understand the system behaviors in the presence of all the sources of variation that can affect performance. Performance variations can be caused by external factors, such as environmental stresses, or by internal factors in your system, such as the variations in the properties of parts, materials, or assemblies. A proper interpretation of the results of testing and experimentation demands that you separate the signal from the noise, requiring that you use the fundamental tools of inferential statistics.
