Modem Ports

You probably have a telephone modem port for your internal modem, which looks exactly like an RJ11 phone jack in the wall of your house (because it is). Don’t confuse the modem port with the Ethernet port; the Ethernet port, as shown below, is larger than the internal modem port.

You can plug any regular phone cable, like the kind you buy at the grocery store, into this port and the other end into a telephone or wall jack. This is one way to get connected to the Internet. When you use a phone cable and connect to this modem port, your connection is called a “dial up” connection—you are only connected to the Internet when your internal modem dials a phone number through this phone line.
