Share Files with a Windows Computer

Or do Steps 1–3 in the opposite direction: Make the new user in Windows (or use an existing user), and enter that person as a new account on your Mac.

Windows File Sharing lets you allow selected Windows users who are already on your local network to log in to your Macintosh and access your files, and you can send files to that Windows user as well. It’s really amazing.

First, open the Sharing system preferences, as explained on page 635). You’ll see the pane shown below.
  • Check the box to select “Windows File Sharing.”

  • Write down the IP address that displays in the pane (circled below).
