Second Step: Connect your Macs with Ethernet Cables

The first thing you must do before you can actually share files is connect the computers together with cables.

  1. Connect two computers directly to each other using a crossover Ethernet cable for the fastest connection (for instance, G3 to G4 or iMac to G4). Just plug each end of the crossover cable into the Ethernet ports on each Mac. If the other Mac is too old to have an Ethernet port, you just need to get a transceiver adapter for the AAUI port; see page 674.

  2. Connect any number of computers together with straight Ethernet cables that go from each computer into an Ethernet hub, router, or switch. If you have a high-speed connection, you already have a router that you can plug the Ethernet cables ...
