The Internet

The Internet is a system of computers all over the world that are linked together using phone lines or other sorts of wires or satellites. This linking together of computers is called a “network.” It was created by the United States government’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in response to the Soviet’s Sputnik project. The government wanted to encourage scientists in academic, military, and research institutions to work together to catch up to the Soviet’s advances in science. The scientists demanded computers, which were enormously expensive at the time, and ARPA realized they would need fewer computers if the machines were connected by means of a network.
