What are Favorites?

You’ve most likely opened the Favorites window by now—click once on the red heart in any Finder window Toolbar. If you haven’t put anything in this folder yet, it probably has only one icon in it, an “alias” of the Documents folder. Favorites use the alias concept quite a bit, so if you don’t know what aliases are, please skim Chapter 23 before you work with Favorites.

Most files in the Favorites folder will be aliases, although you can certainly store original files in here as well. All sorts of files can become favorites: folders, applications, documents, servers, partitions, and even web sites. (Do you see the one file in the window below that is not an alias?)
