Force Quit

Sometimes an application gets a little screwy and you have to force it to quit. You might not be able to get to the application’s File menu to choose “Quit,” but there are several other things you can do. You can also use these techniques to force quit applications that you’re not using at the moment.

In Mac OS X when one application goes down, it doesn’t take the rest of the computer down with it, as happened in previous operating systems. And if you’re a Mac user from way back, you’ll be happy to learn that force quit in OS X actually works.

To force quit an application, either:

From the Apple menu, choose “Force Quit....”
2.
In the dialog box that appears, click once on the name of the application you want to quit.
