Chapter 9. The Desktop, Finder, and Home

The Desktop is what you see on your computer monitor when you start up your Mac. It’s the background that the windows and the Dock sit on, and you probably have disk icons also sitting on the Desktop. The Desktop is a place. (In your Home area you’ll see an icon called “Desktop” which is actually a folder that holds the same things you see on the Desktop itself.)

The Finder is actually a software application that displays and controls the windows, menus, icons, etc., that you see on the Desktop. Finder windows are those windows on the Desktop that show you what is stored inside of your computer.
