Option Key (Alt Key)

Next to the Command Key is the Option key. The Option key is often used in combination with the Command key and/or the Shift key. With the Option key, you can type the special characters such as ¢ and ®, as well as accent marks, as in résumé and piñata (see page 215).

This key sometimes has the word “alt” on it as well because the Option key is often comparable to the Alt key when using Windows programs on the Mac (if the Alt key doesn’t work in a Windows program, try the Shift key).
