A Conversation with Critics

“We all revere the genius Bach;

Each contrapuntal law,

Each voice and phrase that interlock

Inspires a sense of awe.”

“Quite right. Chopin we also praise.

Such drama, and such sweep!

Each time I hear that Polonaise

It almost makes me weep.”

“Rachmaninoff! He knew the deeps

To which a soul can sink.

To wit, his Third Concerto keeps

Me busy trying to think.”

But Anderson; now there’s style!

He’s got them beat by half;

His music always makes me smile,

And often makes me laugh.

“How plebian that comment was!

Let this be understood:

If that is what his music does,

It can’t be any good.”
