Note: This chapter is a corrected and enhanced reprint of the article “The darker side: No fear with FIR: Put a finite impulse response filter to work,” Circuit Cellar, no. 207, October 2007.

Based on the discussion of the Fourier transform in Chapter 6, I can now describe a well-known and very powerful class of digital filters: finite impulse response filters (FIRs). As usual, I will use plain English to explain the ideas, but some mathematical concepts will still appear from time to time. However, I will try to stay as close to the bench as possible, so don’t be afraid, breathe normally, and keep reading. If you get lost, just skip to the “FIR for you” section!
