Appendix 6 Conventional E & M

1. Speaking Their Language

This book has applied an approach to electromagnetic theory that is not (yet) commonly used. We have formulated the theory in terms of the magnetic permeability of free space, μ0, the velocity of light in vacuum c, and the refractive index n. Most of the literature the reader will encounter uses different nomenclature and defines different fundamental quantities, though the underlying physics is not changed. In this appendix, we briefly describe the conventional quantities to assist in translation.

The conventional approach is based on the electric field
