Preface

RF and microwave wireless personal communications is one of the hottest growth areas of the 1990's and beyond. In the past few years, cellular phones have enjoyed the fastest growth rate in the telecommunications industry. Several satellite systems are presently under development for wireless personal voice and data communications from any part of the earth to another using a handheld device. Many books have been published in response to the strong market needs. However, most of these books were written with emphasis dominantly, on systems. This book was prepared to cover all important topics of hardware and circuit design for wireless applications.

The purpose of this book is to introduce engineers and students to the modern RF and microwave circuits and components used in RF and microwave wireless systems. The book starts with some general overview and discussions of wireless systems, device and circuit technologies, and transmitter and receiver system parameters. These are followed by chapters on components and circuit design covering transmission lines and matching techniques, filters and couplers, switches, low-noise amplifiers, mixers and frequency converters, oscillators, power amplifiers, and antennas.

This book is intended to serve as a reference book for practicing engineers and technicians working in the areas of RF, microwaves, communications, solid-state devices, and radar. The book should also be useful as a textbook for RF and microwave courses designed for ...
