IN 2006, Sachin Lawande joined Harman International Industries as chief software architect in the company’s automotive division. Harman was the leading tier one manufacturer of high-end infotainment systems. These factory-installed in-dash systems integrate GPS navigation, music, video, and cell-phone and Internet connectivity. They have become hot, competitive differentiators for luxury automakers, and Harman was the dominant player at the high end. The company’s earliest customers were BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz.
