Decision Variables and Objective Functions

A decision variable represents a set of possible values for some choice in a given decision analysis. If you are choosing, for example, among different connection plans offered by Internet service providers (ISPs), the amount of connect time each month could be an important factor in your decision. If you only use a few hours of connect time each month, one plan might be better. If you use lots of hours, however, another plan might be better. The number of hours of connect time each month would be a decision variable: different amounts of connect time per month are possible.
