Depletion

Depletion is similar to depreciation, but it covers intentional piecemeal removal of certain types of natural resource assets, typically the following:

  • Mines

  • Quarries

  • Oilfields

  • Timberland

  • . . .

Where depreciation is based on time and wear and tear from use, depletion is based on, for example, how much coal has been removed from a coal mine. Depletion is handled in a similar fashion to units of production depreciation. Depletion doesn't apply to software and won't be addressed any further.
