Typical Uses for WLM

WLM is typically used in the following way:

  • Long running batch jobs and non transactional jobs are run in velocity mode and presumably within resource groups. This attempts to guarantee resource capacity and responsiveness.

  • User transactions or transaction based applications are run in either average or percentile response time mode.

When appropriate planning has been undertaken, WLM implementations seem to be very successful. The main keys to success seem to be

  • Correctly identifying the business goals to be met and the applications which will provide the services.

  • Understanding how these services are delivered, i.e. how the applications work.

  • Not being to ambitious in terms of granularity of goals. Twenty goals for business ...
