This chapter provides an overview the possibities available with extensive use of resource management and serves as a guide to help design long-term resource management goals for application developers. The relatively proprietary nature of the mainframe environment has afforded IBM the opportunity to manage resources effectively because of their ownership of most of the components: computer hardware, operating system, middleware, and applications. This is not the case in open systems, or specifically UNIX, environments.
