I would like to thank people who have supported me, not particularly in writing this book, but in getting to the point in my life where I can write a book at all. I started my working life as a failed student leaving the University of Sheffield in 1980 a year early because I just couldn’t be bothered to do the work and thought I knew better. I was wrong. So I ended up working for a building company, up to my knees and higher in water, mud and concrete for seven years, and I found that to be a formative experience which toughened me up a great deal.
