Success Factors

Given the number of variables affecting the viability of xDSL, the following questions are among the most important for predicting its future:

  • How many systems will be upgraded to DSL for POTS service? Using more DSL systems tends to reduce incremental cost for rolling out service.

  • How many loops qualify? The higher the percentage of loops that qualify (including inside wiring), the higher the marketability of the service.

  • How well can Web servers deliver significantly faster service to showcase the speed of xDSL networks? If Web servers or the Internet are chronically congested, the value of faster local loops is lost, the same as for cable.
