MPEG-4

Even as Access Networks are becoming faster, advances in computing power on smaller platforms continues to spur development of new compression algorithms and standards. Just as MPEG-2 was being deployed, the MPEG committee embarked on a new approach to compression and controls with the development of MPEG-4. (By the way, MPEG-3 was originally intended as a specification for high definition. However, HDTV became embedded in MPEG-2, so the MPEG-3 dropped by the wayside).
