Having arrived at this point, the reader should be ready to progress to more advanced textbooks on Lie algebras, Lie groups, and their representations. For the theory of Lie groups, which we touched on briefly in Chapter 1, good starting points are the books by Carter, Segal and Macdonald [3], Hall [8], and Rossmann [15]; those by Bourbaki [1] and Knapp [13] provide more detailed accounts. The aim of this chapter is to indicate a few high points of the theory of Lie algebras that are now in prospect and to provide some specific references that the reader can consult in order to reach them.
