Wireless networks use an access point (AP), also called a wireless access point (WAP), to provide a gateway to the wired network and a wireless local area network adapter (WLAN adapter or simply wireless adapter) to provide a link between a wireless client PC and the AP.

DO IT ALL WITH ONE BOX

Wireless routers combine an access point with a router, and are a good choice for a home or SOHO (small office/home office) network. Most wireless routers also include several Ethernet hub or switch ports to allow connecting wired Ethernet adapters to the router, providing an all-in-one solution. The router protects your network from intrusions, the wireless AP hosts your wireless clients, and the Ethernet hub or switch ports provide a place to connect your wired PCs. Because wireless routers cost only a few dollars more than single-purpose components, they are extremely popular. We use a D-Link DI-624 wireless router to manage our SOHO network.

Advice from Jim Cooley

Many cable/DSL modems now ship with just a USB output jack, which makes it difficult to connect to a WAP/router. You may need to purchase a replacement modem that also provides an Ethernet jack. Alternatively, some cable/DSL providers offer a choice of modems. If your provider offers that choice, ask for a modem that includes an Ethernet jack.
