Determining DPI

DPI is determined based on two factors:

  • The size of the final render
  • The draft-to-final iterative process

The final render size is subjective and depends on what you need to convey in the image.

As outlined in Chapter 20, resolution affects render times: higher resolutions equal longer times. Start with low resolutions, using IRP presets or setting custom small sizes. Here are some useful initial resolutions for first and second drafts:

  • 640 (width) × 480 (height)
  • 800 (width) × 600 (height)

Useful resolutions for third and fourth drafts can range from these initial values to 1280 (width) × 720 (height). Final typical resolutions can be set between 1280 × 720 and 1920 × 1080.
