The Dawn of the Machine Age

The projects in this book were inspired by inventions of the time period from about 1700 to 1875, a period often known as the Industrial Revolution (see Figure I-1). This was a very, very important time in the history of invention. Before this period, most things were made one item at a time by craftsmen like blacksmiths and stonecutters. But this was a slow and expensive way to make things, especially for items many people were interested in buying and using.
