Chapter 10

Degradation and Failure of Electro-Optical Materials and Devices

Abstract

Together with microelectronics, optoelectronics (or electro-optics) is transforming our lives and helping to shape a future based on high technology. This is evident from the dominant role of optical materials and devices in some of the most important arenas of human activity, e.g., fibers for optical communications; lasers and imaging systems for medical applications; optical sensors for a host of industrial processing, control, and testing applications; lenses, filters; and optically active materials for observing, detecting, displaying, and recording images in microscopy, photography, media, and information systems.
