7.1 Achievements and Conclusions

With the help of modern powerful computing capabilities, probabilistic approaches have been widely implemented in reliability analysis of engineering systems. The first-order reliability method (FORM), the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method, and the response surface method (RSM) are examples of these approaches. They are applied, often in combination with the finite element (FE) method, to quantitatively assess the probability of failure of engineering structures. However, there are either practical or theoretical limitations in applying these methods, particularly where dynamic systems are concerned.
