Guidelines for Expat Managers
- Begin with an attitude of respect for the local culture and demonstrate this respect by actively working to understand the country you are operating in.
- Listen and actively learn. Be open-minded. Avoid stereotyping the local situations, even if you have had negative experiences in the past.
- Be flexible on details, but stand firm on values and basic principles.
- Practice authoritative—not authoritarian—leadership. Build legitimacy.
- Use the company's global culture to build a strong local company culture. Use the operating principles from the company's core document to gain local traction.
