Bleed Settings

When you create a new Illustrator document, you are given the option to specify a bleed value. You can also specify bleed in an existing document by choosing File > Document Setup. Bleeds can be asymmetrical, and can be up to one inch in depth. The specified bleed value is applied to all artboards within an Illustrator file; there is no option to create a unique bleed setting for an individual artboard. How bleed is handled in exported PDFs, AI, or EPS files depends both on the settings used during export and the import options chosen when the file is placed into another application, such as InDesign. For more on this topic, see “Saving for Other Applications,” later in this chapter.
