Smart Objects
To minimize the loss of data that results from transformations such as scaling or rotation, use Smart Objects when possible. Smart Objects store the original information for raster or vector content within the Photoshop file, allowing the program to perform cumulative transformations without multiple interpolations of data. Usually, if you scale, then rotate, then scale again, Photoshop performs three separate sets of interpolation, and you lose a bit of data (and, therefore, detail) in each transformation. With a Smart Object, however, Photoshop starts afresh with the original data (whether it’s vector or pixel), and calculates the total effects of the transformations together, resulting in only one step of interpolation.
