Releasing on the Internet

No one on the planet has the faintest idea what business models will succeed on the Internet. When the dot-com bubble burst in the late 1990s, the dream of being your own Internet movie studio and distributor tanked with it. For now, most of the video on the Web is limited to short clips in postcard-sized windows.

We do know that the biggest obstacle to commercial video distribution via the Internet is narrow bandwidth. What's needed to achieve commercial video quality is a huge increase in bandwidth, which the telecommunications industry is quietly working on while coping with its own growth pains. Universal access to big, cheap video bandwidth is on the way—but no one knows exactly when it will show up.
