Initially, film editors and video editors used very different techniques in their respective industries. Film editors literally cut strips of film and spliced them together; video editors sat at consoles and copied scenes from one tape to another.
Once NLE technology was introduced, video and film editing converged rapidly—as did the job descriptions of film and video editors. Within the last 20 years it has become routine for film dailies to be transferred to video for editing in an all-digital environment. Work doesn't resume on the film itself until negative cutters, working with lint-free gloves, cut and assemble the negative for striking release prints, negative conforming from the edited video version.
