Working with Actors

Continuing a discussion started in Chapter 8, here are some fine points for directing actors on the set. You may find some of these techniques equally useful when you're working with subjects of interviews and documentaries.

The Illusion of the First Time

The famous acting theorist and teacher Constantin Stanislavsky, advised actors to create “the illusion of the first time.” That is, the actor should deliver a line as though he just thought of it. This is even more important on screen than it is on the stage, when the image of an actor's face may be so large you can practically see him think.
