You may be tempted to save money by picking up all your gear from the rental house on the morning of the first shooting day. Don't.
Even on small-scale projects, your first shooting day should start bright and early, with everyone (and all needed equipment) on the set. Otherwise, you may not get around to shooting your first take until mid-afternoon, putting you behind schedule from day one.
An ideal plan is to rent a truck and pick up your lights, mics, cables, and all the rest of your gear two days in advance (D-Day –2). (You might want the camcorder even earlier, for shooting tests.)
