MARTINI SHOT: Last shot of the day.

According to Hollywood lore, the martini is the last shot of the day—because the shot after that will probably be in a chilled glass at the closest bar.

Calling for the martini is the director's prerogative, since it's often necessary to keep everyone on the set until the day's shooting is in the can. Days that last 10–12 hours are routine. And even when the cast and crew pack up, the director and AD will be planning to meet after a break to go over the reports and review the schedule. (You won't get much sleep during this time, so make sure you're in good physical shape.)

As the hours stretch on, crew members yearn for the next shot to be the martini.
