What to Rent, What to Buy
For a typical three-week DV shoot, it's generally more economical to rent camcorders, audio gear, and lights than to buy them. Furthermore, you can rent better equipment than you can buy for the same amount of money.
A possible exception is camcorders. Every camera operator wants her own camcorder and grows to love (or hate) the way it handles and responds. But when you think about how fast DV technology is changing—especially with the advent of prosumer 24P and the prospects of Foveon chip technology—anyone but a career videographer should think carefully before investing several thousand dollars in a camera that won't be the latest and greatest for very long.
