Scouting Locations

It's essential to inspect the places you intend to shoot before the day you arrive with a full cast and crew. On big-budget movies, a production staffer called a location scout checks out the sites in person, then makes recommendations to the director and DP, possibly showing them stills taken to match the views in the storyboard frames.

LOCATION SCOUT: Movie professional who identifies and travels to prospective locations to judge and report back to director and producers on their suitability.

NOTE

The location scout might be either a location manager or a production assistant who reports to the location manager. (See “Meet Your Crew,” later in this chapter.)
