Using Three-Point Lighting

Effective film and video lighting almost always follows a three-point plan (Figure 6.1). This basic technique works for all types of projects, shooting styles, and lighting situations, whether indoors or out.

Figure 6.1. In an ideal three-point lighting plan, key light accentuates the subject, fill light reduces its shadow areas, and back light creates depth and heightens interest by drawing the subject away from the background, toward the audience.
