Basic Video Shooting Styles: News or Film

No matter what kind of digital video project you're planning, early on you'll have to choose between two very different styles of shooting, each representing a unique set of challenges for you as a videomaker. This decision will affect everything else you do. Your choices are:

  • News style: no script, no crew, run and gun.

  • Film style: script, crew, take your time and get it right.

This is not about how you stage your scenes, nor how they look, nor about the form or purpose of your presentation. It's how you gear up and shoot.

SCENE: Basic unit of visual storytelling that advances the plot or imparts useful information to the audience.
