Types of Digital Video: Sorting out the Confusion

The term “digital video” is an umbrella that covers a variety of recording formats—some new and some more than a decade old. You may find some of the older equipment in broadcast studios and editing suites, but it's unlikely you'll want (or be able to afford) to use it. Still, you should know what the various formats are; you may end up needing archival footage from one of them.
