Going global with your Web site requires familiarity with two concepts: internationalization (commonly shortened to “I18N” because of the 18 letters between the I and the N) and localization (similarly, L10N).

Internationalization

Internationalization is the process of reengineering your back end so that it can recognize and process any language. It also involves making source code changes so the software can understand different currency, measurement, and date formats. Once the back end has been internationalized, it's not too difficult to translate content into the target language.
