CHAPTER 10 KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON EVERY DAY
The expression ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ was coined by the Government’s Ministry of Information in 1939 for one of the posters intended to boost the public morale for World War II. But this particular poster was never used.1 The print run was pulped except for a few. One poster was discovered in 2000 by a bookseller, and another 15 by the BBC Antiques Road Show2 in 2012. The fact that it has become such a successful commercial enterprise shows how it chimed a chord with our frantic and uncertain modern life.
