CURATION, COPYRIGHT, AND THE CREATIVE COMMONS

In U.S. law, copyright is intended to provide protection for “original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, architectural, cartographic, choreographic, pantomimic, pictorial, graphic, sculptural, and audiovisual creations.” Copyright is implied the moment a piece of work is created, whether electronically or on a cocktail napkin. However, these laws, which were developed in 1790, have not been updated for the digital age. Many Internet users believe that due to our social media economy, where we share and collaborate on everything from images to transportation, copyright standards need to be modified.
