The successful transition to a sustainable energy future will require both the integration of a broader range of renewable technologies into the energy system, and a significant increase in the overall share of renewable energy in overall supply. To achieve these aims, a greater level of systems thinking will be needed. This will require a more holistic view of policy making that sees renewables, energy efficiency, and energy generally (across all end-use sectors), in addition to agriculture, forestry, education and training, water, construction, urban planning, and so forth, as interconnected sectors.
