RÉSUMÉS

Altogether too much of a big deal is made about résumés. Those ads that scream “Can’t get a job? Maybe it’s your résumé!” are pigwash. Likewise the new wave of innovative-creative-dynamic-revolutionary résumés-with-a-difference—these are just gimmicks being peddled by professional résumé-writing people, each of whom is trying to build a reputation by outdoing the others in originality, without regard for results. Don’t worry about such pickinesses; spend your time doing substantive things.

Nonetheless, you do have to have a résumé, and a bad one can hurt you. In fact, there really isn’t such a thing as a good résumé—instead there are only acceptable ones and bad ones. Your concern is to be sure yours isn’t bad.
